Book #34

34) Sterling, Bruce. HOLY FIRE. Bantam: 1996.

Cyber tech end of the century futuristic science fiction. Good themes about creativity and humanity, existence versus living, rejuvenation body mods.

Best (no, I don't agree but its awfully clever) quote was from a scene of two characters discussing reading:

"It's awful, a terrible habit! In virtuality at least you get to interact! Even with television you at least have to use visual processing centers and parse real dialogue with your ears! Really, reading is so bad for you, it destroys your eyes and hurts your posture and makes you fat."

I checked the bank account on a break at work yesterday, and noticed that Russ had gotten food from a Mexican place for lunch. I was all set to be peeved at him (if he tried to pull "but I just had that") and change our dinner plans to go out together for Cinco de Mayo fare. But he said lunch was just a burrito, and so we went out to my favorite place with Tom and Kara. Yummy fajitas and flan! Good meal and a good time.

Afterwards, Russ dropped me off at Books-A-Million while he went on to Home Depot to browse. Now, I won't say I never buy anything there, but browsing at the hardware store is not my idea of real fun.

The bookstore was good though! Browsed the current issues of the periodicals; I usually concentrate on the arts and crafts magazines, tattoo, and horror movie rags. Picked up a copy of the novel The Prestige. I had watched the movie recently and wanted to give the book, a World Fantasy award winner, a try.

Almost bought another weird book too: Drawing and Painting the Undead: Create Gruesome Ghouls for Graphic Novels, Computer Games, and Animation by Keith Thompson. There was this great steampunk image of a woman with a mechanical womb.

Searched on the web this morning for it. Found a link in this nice steampunk site: http://www.gopun.com/post/44736/steampunk-art/

Here's the particular pic: http://www.keiththompsonart.com/pages/necromancer.html
and another I really like: http://www.keiththompsonart.com/pages/scribe.html Be sure to check out the rest of the artist's work!

Have been domestic but productive this morning. Took a shower. Did the dishes, vacuumed the living room and hall carpets, and have started a load of laundry. Also did some work on doll project. Am working 12-9 shifts today and tomorrow at the library.
