Aha! Gaslamp fantasy and Girl Genius
Jan. 23rd, 2008 10:53 amI think this may be the niche for me, and the answer to my steampunk persona conundrum!
(all facts and quotes lifted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl_Genius and the GG FAQ at http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/info/faq.php )
Kaja Foglio, co-creator of the comic GIRL GENIUS, coined the term "Gaslamp Fantasy". In this genre, stories are set in a world full of big, clanking Victorian-style tech, old-fashioned clothes, Frankenstein monsters and airships. It is a mix of magic and mad science.
Influences include Jules Verne and H. Rider Haggard. The genre is popularly called "steampunk" but Kaja didn't think that was quite descriptive enough.
"I called it Gaslamp Fantasy because, around the time we were bringing Girl Genius out, there was a comic called Steampunk on the shelves and I didn't want any confusion. Plus, I've never liked the term Steampunk much for our work, it's derived from Cyberpunk (a term which I think actually fits its genre well) but we have no punk, and we have more than just steam, and using a different name seemed appropriate."
It also differs from classic steampunk in that technology is not just limited to machines but also encompasses biology. Thus alongside the Clanks (robots), dirigibles and walking gunboats of the world there are constructs - biological creations which range from Frankenstein-style creatures to talking cats and mouse-sized mammoths."
So..any creations I make will prolly be more in line with this concept of gaslamp fantasy. At the moment, I'm not thinking of using or reproducing the GG universe, but something similar. I'm leaning toward something likely more biological and perhaps rooted in women's domestic arts than the purely mechanical and technological of classic steampunk.
BTW, Girl Genius is a very cool webcomic. It has won or been nominated for the following awards:
Girl Genius has won the following awards:
* Webcartoonist Choice Awards 2007 for Outstanding Science Fiction Comic.
* Webcartoonist Choice Awards 2006 for Outstanding Story Concept.
