Jan. 20th, 2009 02:49 pmHad someone call asking if we had "The Book of Counted Sorrows." Actually, I already knew that this book of poetry is not quite what it seems:
In Dean Koontz's books, he always quotes from The Book of Counted Sorrows, with the epigraphs and poems being credited to a Stephen Crane. Through the years, Koontz has led many readers (and librarians) on a wild goose chase for this elusive collection. As it turns out, until recently, no such book existed. Koontz, a master of horror and suspense, simply made up the verses himself and attributed them to the bogus book title.
The Book of Counted Sorrows was released as an e-book with Barnes and Noble in 2003. It was published as a regular book by Charnel House (limited edition of 1,250 copies) in 2003. The book is not just the epigraphs from his books but also offers a history of the book's past owners interwoven with a narrative tour of Koontz Manor, using himself as the main character.
