brief, books, baking
Aug. 25th, 2009 07:26 amThanks to my friends for all the Happy Birthday greetings. :)
I had a great weekend, but yesterday turned out to be a regroup-recharge-rest lazy day. Once I got home from Hannah's midmorning, I just stayed in, dog tired and spent large portions of the day napping with my cat.
Listened to some cool accordion music online from my favorite Let's Polka.com blog.
I did frost the carrot cake, and spent over an hour sketching out a siamese twin doll design as a topper, but ended up not doing any fancy decorating on it...all the sugar was getting to me (confess small binge) and I had to put it away. Oh well, maybe a plain cake is better anyway, as I just would have spent all day explaining the funky theme decorations to my coworkers before anyone would cut it to eat...
Book # 55: Garcia Marquez, Gabriel. MEMORIES OF MY MELANCHOLY WHORES. Knopf: 2005.
Later (post coffee break) Edit: The carrot cake with maple-cream cheese frosting is a keeper recipe! I had a small piece and it was yummy. Much better than the nibbles and bites I'd "stolen" during baking* and frosting, moister from freezing and setting up, the correct balance of cake and frosting flavors.
*I also realized what was "off" with the first tasting---I'd held back adding some of the carrots and raisins in the batter for the top layer, thinking they might interfer with the texture for carving, so that wasn't so much carrot cake as just spice cake-- the bottom layers were loaded with carrots then and much richer for it. And then I ended up not using the spice cake layer afterall.
