53) Mieville, China. KRAKEN: an Anatomy. New York : Del Rey/Ballantine Books, 2010.

British author Mieville creates a fantasy London where anything is possible and where something threatens to end the world and burn the city out of existence. When a nine-meter-long dead squid is stolen, tank and all, from a London museum, curator Billy Harrow finds himself swept up in a world he didn't know existed. Being chased by various magical cults, crazies and criminals (including a talking tattoo), and the police/sorcerers of the Fundamentalist and Sect-Related Crime Unit, Billy holds the key to finding the missing squid--that just may be an embryonic god...

MiƩville's dark urban fantasy is a rich, dense literary work, full of wordplay and imagery. I quite enjoyed it.

Got a surprise blast-from-the-past in the mail yesterday. My sister returned an old race finish certificate of mine (that had somehow ended up in her stuff out in California)

...it was from my FIRST marathon!

Cowboy Marathon, Laramie WY; Sept. 11, 1982. I finished in a time of 3:45:13.

Made me feel nostalgic (and old); that was 28 years ago! :) Hey, but I'm still running...

2.25 mile walk (and phone chat) at lunch in 95F weather.
2 miles on arc trainer and weights session at gym. (bitched and moaned the whole time, but felt good afterwards for having let Barry drag me over to the gym in the evening.)
