Costume refs, notes and thoughts
Oct. 2nd, 2010 12:27 pmSeveral friends comment-queried to my previous post wondering how I'm going to manage to represent Leela's mutant cyclops eye in my planned Halloween costume? Since the character has been around a while and cosplayed often before (So, I'm not being terribly original, but I don't think she's been done to death either), I was able to find some ref pics online of how others handled this feature. Leaning toward something like this* (see pic below), and possibly use a dust mask as the domed base, but I do have to be sure I actually have some field of vision while wearing the mask covering my own eyes.

I've already started assembling some of the bits and bobs I'm going to need:
--have the basic stretch pants and tank top
Via ebay have bought: --plastic ray gun --nude/skin tone leotard (to cover my arm tattoos)
Pondering Leela's hairstyle too:
There's a really well done wig* (see pic below) in the reference images that I could attempt to duplicate, or another option would be to make a soft sculpt/foam/satin covered headpiece in the shape of hairdo. Since I'm considering making the costume look pretty much like the action figure**/cartoon Leela, rather than Leela as-if actual human, the carvedfoam hair actually might look more cartoony style than using wighair. As to colour, most of the costumes reproductions seem to have deeper purple wigs, but the cartoon version sometime reads as more magenta/purple--which way to go?
Another possible (detail) thought I had was to get a set of "wax lips" or Woochie's http://costumezone.com/images/products/f/fa60.gif ,paint 'em pink to replicate the exaggeration of the character's design of big lips/less chin?
*NOT my costume work, but I hope to create something of a similar look and quality

**action figure
Will need to sew or craft:
--boot covers (for over my running shoes) lol--was tempted by the idea of spacey platform boots, but I gotta be able to run. :)
--arm gauntlet
--eye (lashes too)
--hairpiece
--mod out/repaint ray gun
