This time next Saturday, I'll already be almost 4 hours out on the Monte Sano trails.
Mountain Mist 50K Trail Run. Billed as "Alabama's Toughest Trail Run". http://www.huntsvilletrackclub.org/HTC_Races/MM11/index.html
Gulp. This is the race where I face planted in last year, bloodying my forehead and timing out/DNF. I really want a different outcome this time!
This past week has been a recovery slump for me.
I hurt my right foot last weekend (on a 13 mile trail run); perhaps by foolishly not allowing myself an easy enough recovery after my 24 hour race the week before? I did something to the the tarsal area of my right foot. Not sure what, all I know is that area on the top of my foot had been a bit inflamed and hurt whenever I'd bend my foot and ankle. Add onto that our weather, where we got 8" of snow that has yet to completely melt off; so, it hasn't been ideal conditions for outdoor running. So, I've been forced to take it easy, and the foot is feeling better now.
I have gotten out this week to walk a couple of times for a few miles, and went to the gym yesterday and was able to run on the treadmill and do some time on the Arc trainer (for a combined total of 6 miles). That gives me a whopping mileage total of 11.5 miles for the week so far, with a noontime walk planned for today and a short run tomorrow morning. And then I'll probably should keep things pretty light until the race next weekend.
I wonder how much snow is still left up on the trails at the moment? How much will melt off in the next week; will we get rain and be slogging mud again this year? Currently, the extended forecast is for dry but cold, with temps right around freezing, on the 22nd; I could live with that.
Whereas last year, the MMTR was my first attempt at a 50K trail run, now the distance isn't an unknown quanity or unmet goal. I'm much more comfortable running the trails at the State Park and Land Trust than I was last year; lol, although I am still quite capable of getting myself lost out there! I'll even risk jinxing myself by saying I've come to *like* the climb at Waterline!
But the Mountain Mist remains the gnarliest of local races, and I so want to be able to actually complete this race; it means a lot to me! The time cutoffs (even without falling) in this particular race still are still going to be one tough challenge for me. So, here I am. pre-race fretful and anxious, rambling out a post, seeking some calm.
All I can do is go out there, give it my best effort next weekend, and enjoy myself and the race expereince--whatever it proves to be.
