Jun. 8th, 2011 01:25 pmIts been a little while since I actually posted.
The Cotton Row 10K run on Memorial Day went well; I had fun. My ankle held up to the distance, but let me know about it the next couple of days. It is getting better, but there is still that "but" to it. I have been running a bit more (as well as getting to the gym ) again; still keeping it to relatively slow paced short distances.
I'm liking my new FiveFinger shoes! Longest distance I've done in them so far is the 4.5 miles I did on Monday.
So, I probably won't try them in this weekend's 15K race, but maybe the 5 miler I'm registered for the following Saturday?
I don't think I'm going to be a barefoot purist though...think I prefer wearing the shoes with socks (injinji liners); my toes seem to fit better in the shoe's toesleeves with them. And it certainly makes them a whole lot easier to put on than when barefoot! I can pretty much just slide my socked feet and toes in without having to fight getting my twisted little toes in the right places and position.
I also need to figure out how to attach and wear gaiters with the Vffs. They are better at "keeping stuff out" than other shoes, since they fit so snug, but I still think having something over my ankles could be a help sometimes. Also, I don't know if I'll ever get comfortable using them for running on "real " trails (but my friend Naresh ran his trail 100 in Vffs!), but I could see using them eventuallty on easy trails.
I wore them for the first time today over at Delano Park, where the running path is dirt and fine gravel. Only 2.5 miles (all I had time for on my dinner break). Even if I didn't get gravel in them, I did kick up some and rather wear gaiters than feel it hitting the tops of my feet and ankles. Felt good though. It may just be my perception, but I feel like my posture is better in the FiveFingers and they do make a difference in my gait.
Time will tell if its a real and useful change.
Been on a bit of a book buying binge (hopefully to lead to the same in reading them!) Picked up a new urban faery/fantasy anthology at the local B&N. It's a new set of stories in the BORDERLANDS shared world, where I was first introduced to Charles DeLint's writing more than a decade ago. And ordered some running books from Amazon; two guides (on fixing your feet, and ultra training) and a memoir of (New Zealand ultra athlete Lisa Tamati).
