I know it's not October yet, but I couldn't hold out from getting costume obsessed. Here is a collage of some of my inspiration sources. I've purchased the dress in the center photo, because I love the vivid colors! (the style also works, as I just don't have a god shape for midriff baring cholis and saris.) Am thinking of turning it into a "bolly-ween kali" outfit. But I'm also fretful, Is it possible to do a multicultural mash-up that is still respectful of the ethnic source?

I've also made a Pinterest board to keep track of ref pics:http://www.pinterest.com/heatherawhitesi/kali-costume-bollywood-inspired-costume/
I think that's enough image collecting though, now I've got to synthesize them into a costume design. My idea is of a Kali figure with a light vibe, more like an Indian devi version of the bright colored cheerful Day of the Dead calaveras, rather than gory warrior goddess, and with some Halloween imagery thrown in as well. (instead of a severed head, she'll hold a jack-o-lantern and her weapons are carving tools; her skull necklace is of glitter skulls). Somehow, I always seems to want to do scary with a bit of cute in it for Halloween.
I did go to Michaels today (and used a 30% off sale coupon) to buy 10 small styrofoam skulls, glitter paint in green, orange, black, and purple, (and a costume ring as well). Did a look around at the local Halloween stores as well. Some cheap enough options for props, but I want to clarify my design before I start buying too much stuff.
I sure hope the dress, from http://www.IndianWeddingSaree.com , arrives in time for halloween!
