Food, Milk and Lodging
Jun. 9th, 2009 11:47 amFor some reason the Alabama Department of Public Health/Division of Food, Milk and Lodging strikes me as a humorous title! Been doing some research trying to figure out the legalities of my cake sales. (gawds know I could never get my present apartment kitchen licensed!) But, I think the following might apply for sales at places like the Flying Monkey? And the number/frequency of my word of mouth commissions would probably be low enough to fly under the "real business" radar.
According to the Tuscaloosa News: (March 2009)http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/article/20090324/news/903239894&tc=yahoo
The Alabama Farmers Market Authority and the Alabama Department of Public Health/Division of Food, Milk and Lodging worked together to create the amendment to the state’s food establishment sanitation regulations.
Under the amendment, food prepared for sale at farmers markets or at charitable, religious, civic or not-for-profit events is permissible as long as it’s not potentially hazardous and a label or visible sign indicates that it was prepared at a location not inspected by the health department.
These include items such as baked breads, rolls, cookies, cakes, brownies, fudge, double-crust fruit pies, fruit jams, jellies, marmalades and relishes, candy, spices or herbs and snack items such as popcorn, caramel corn and peanut brittle.
