Q: What do Southern vampires who are/used to be distance runners ingest during races?
A: Gu-Blood!
At about mile 20 today, I had a packet of raspberry flavored energy gel. I had stashed it in my jogbra, next to my beating heart, so it was warmed to body temperature. GAH!GACK! It was vile! The first thing I thought of was, ugghhh, this is about the consistency of blood (and bright red color too), and then the above stupid joke popped into my head, and I LOLed and had a giggle fit for about the next quarter mile.
I AM NOW AN ULTRAMARATHONER!
I completed the Black Warrior 50K in 7 hours:43minutes. That's a blistering speed of just under 15 minutes per mile, but hey it was (my first) 31 mile trail run.
GORGEOUS WEATHER (mid-50's blue skies)!!! GORGEOUS TRAILS in the Bankhead Forest. Some mud, and since we were running on a lot of horse trails you has to watch out for, well you know, shit; but nothing like the mud at the Mountain Mist. However, there must have been somewhere over a dozen creek crossings, mostly small splashers but a few were ankle to almost knee high with no way around getting your shoes wet. (and then having to run on with heavy sodden shoes going squish-slosh-squish) Seemed like my feet were wet through most of the race! (I saved my extra socks to change into at the end--with also dry shoes)
I ran most of the race with Diane, the Nashville runner who also timed out in the MMTR right ahead of me. She was great company! Yay, a new running friend. Inspiring too, she's 53 and in the last 8 years has run 49 Ultramarathons, as well as over 50 marathons; WOW! Didn't see Tiger, until the finish, as it turns out she had gotten lost on the way to the race, missed the start, started late and only had time to run the 25K course. Had some nice chats with other runners as well. One guy patted me on the back as I passed him on an uphill, calling me a "little mountain climber". Another cool lady, Denise, will be at Delano in three weeks and we plan to run part of that event together.
I somewhat guiltily finished about two minutes ahead of Diane, she had to make a pit stop after the last aid station and I found a burst of energy about that same time. I also passed a guy in the last mile to finish in front of him; don't know his name but Diane and I called him "green shirt", we'd been playing pass and be passed back and forth for about the second half of the race.
I'm sure there are other details to include, but I'm going to go take a shower now...
A pic of Diana and I post race.
