Oh, Diana and I made and BEAT the race cut off time (at 22.5 miles before 6:20) by nearly an hour! Yeah, this race is that much easier than the MM, but it felt good! (vindicated...and now I feel like I can wear all my ultra shirts without dnf runner's remorse)

DeWayne Satterfied WON the 50K in a time of 3:57. WOW! He passed Diane and I on the cross over loop (umm..mile 12ish for us and 21 for him?), running way faster than we could have ever managed even fresh at the start! I don't know who the first place woman was; results aren't posted yet. But I'm sure she was much faster than me.

Other than the raspberry gu, I wasn't dripping any blood this race, but I still did take a couple slight tumbles. Much softer landings, but still klutzy. I really think it has to do with a)my bifocals and bad vision and b)I "shuffle" and don't pick up my feet high enough to always clear the trail debris.

I had to smile at the "little mountain climber" comment. Not to say that really tough ones aren't harder, but I do tend to "like" uphills and can keep churning and chugging (albeit slowly) along on moderate inclines. Unfortunately, I'm not swift with the downhills; I just don't have the legs for a good stride.

The glue I used didn't hold on my patched shoe treads. Will have to inquire as to what might do the trick. Otherwise, there are still lots of miles left in the shoes. Next trail race is McKay's Hollow on March 27.

Have to admit, the miles between Aid station 4 (22 miles) and 5 (at 28 miles) were LONG (and hilly)! I didn't think we were ever going to come off the trails and see the last stretch of road. And all I could keep thinking was "damn slowest ever marathon time". There was also one point where we had to get past a large tree fallen across the path. Diane climbed over it, and I crawled under it. :)

Wish I knew who the aid station volunteers were. Everyone was so nice. One particular fellow at #1 and #5 was great with personal encouragements; little things like that can really give you a mental boost.

Diane wants me to consider doing some other races with her. :) It was SO nice having company on this run! (and I know she helped me a LOT with pacing and such) Will have to look at websites and work up my dream list. Think we are both going to do the Oakbarrel Half Marathon in April. Diane mentioned that she's hoping to get a group going to the Pikes Peak Marathon (in Colorado) in August...Ohhhhhh! It's the weekend right before my 50th birthday. And it's also a race I ran "in a previous life" back in 1982; it would be so incredibly great to go back now! http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org (Note to self: registration opens March 17, 2020: 12 noon MT..1 pm CT. And fills up FAST!)

Just for old times sake, I went and looked up my stats from when I did the Pikes Peak Ascent race August 21, 1982. Time of 3:54 (for 41st place out of 121 female finishers, and about midway through the field of 500 male runners) Ah; memories of the glory days of my youth. :)

Three packets of GU. Five Luna energy chews (like gummi moons). Four pieces candied ginger. One Cliff bar. 1 and a half Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (my decided favorite food-of-the-gods in ultras). Handful of pretzels. Three or four small chocolate chip cookies. Lots of water (volunteers were great about filling bottles at every aid station). Two cups Gatorade. 1 cup Pepsi. Not to mention breakfast of a bagel and banana before; a post race snack of veggie burger, red beans and rice, and a brownie (served by a fiery redhead who says she's from Lawrence County but speaks with a cool Russian accent) AND dinner once back in Huntsville, a no carne burrito and banana pudding from Bandito (along with some chat and compliments from the restaurant owner Oscar) Sounds like a freaking f**kin' binge doesn't it? But I'll bet I used and needed every single calorie!

My daughter affectionately calls me "crackhead" for running like I do. (lol..guess I took that literally at the MMTR) But the only drugs involved are tylenol and endorphins....
