It's almost Summer..time to be running barefoot..well, almost!

I think he was trying to perk me up out of my pout about having to cancel on the BMM ultra, but B. was a real runner-supportive sweetie to me yesterday. He went in halfsies on the price with me so I could afford them, and I now have a pair of Vibram FiveFingers. I'm stoked!

(note the lack of tattoos; these aren't my legs, but it's the same model of shoe. Yes, and of course, in the same obnoxious pink and orange colorway!

I was bouncing around like a hyperactive happy child at the store (First Place Athletics). Had a nice shoes-running-races talk with Clint, the young guy working there. He's a distance runner too and recognized me from some of the local races. He was very patient as I tried on about 4 or 5 different sizes and models of the Vibrams, before deciding I liked the Bikila (size 41 womens) best.

Here's a link to a thorough review of the Bikila: http://birthdayshoes.com/vibram-five-fingers-bikila-review-part-1

fyi: Fleet Feet, the other local running store, doesn't carry Vibrams, but I had been there earlier in the day as well, picking up KT tape for my ankle. In purple no less.

Trying on the FiveFingers, I was a bit sceptical. I have funky shaped feet (ask my daughter). I've never been a barefoot person; nor a sockless runner. But WOW! was I surprised and pleased. Very comfortable and so incredibly light. Fit like a glove.

I'm going to take it slow breaking them in (remember, I am also rehabbing a sprained ankle), but I did wear them for a while yesterday. First, at the gym, I walked a mile on the treadmill (fighting the urge to RUN) and another on the Arc trainer. In the evening, B. and I took an outside walk of about a mile and half. (I teased him about us being "old folks in funny shoes" out for a stroll; he teased me about only being good enough that he only bought me a "single" shoe.)

Felt good! Did get one tiny hot spot on my right pinkie toe after the gym, but think that was because of squishing my foot up against the toe stops on the Arc trainer (and because I have mutant curved small pinkie toes--again, ask my daughter). Hope getting used to the shoes will stretch them (either the material or the space between my toes) enough so that'll be okay. If it continues to be a problem, I'll just have to be like the stepsisters in Cinderella and chop off the toe so I can wear the glass slipper!

I can't wait to actually run in them, I'll let you know when I do, but so far, so GOOD!
