never tutu much
Apr. 11th, 2014 04:41 pmThere was recently some viral internet kerfuffle over a magazine asking a runner if they could use her photo, and then mocking her for running in a tutu. http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/lifestyle/SELF-magazine-editor-ousted-after-tutugate.html
I decided to wear a tutu costume for my next event, the Bridge Street Half Marathon coming up on Sunday. But giving it a wink, a plain tutu isn't enough, I am crafting an over-skirt from some of my old race bibs.
The other day, I had toted supplies with me and was working on sorting the bibs while sitting in the Doctor's waiting room. Got a "WOW! That's a lot of races!" from the guy sitting next to me. :)
I think I have about 50 bibs, but I know I’ve actually participated more races than that over the last 5 years. Just didn’t manage to hang onto all the numbers, or they are strewn in random places around the house, perhaps used as book marks, and otherwise who knows where.
Have gotten the bibs all pinned to a waistband (randomly overlapping). Of course, I spent a long time trying to decide which order looked best, what bib next to another and so forth.
Perfectionist part of me would like to nitpick and fuss, and carefully sew the bibs securely to the waistband. (And now I’m thinking maybe elastic would have been a better choice than the bias band I used and will have to tie on) However, this is just a knock off concept costume. A silly lark. A throw-together costume. Nobody says it has to be perfect. Besides, thematically, the safety pins are appropriate, as that’s how bibs are attached to clothing during a race.
All that’s left to do is safety pin the overskirt (just a few places to hold it in place) to the costume leotard, so it lays on top of the tutu’s tulle fluff. Actually, I do like the basic ballerina costume piece. It's a spaghetti strapped leotard with tutu attached. I was really afraid it would be too cheap (at 30$ fairly inexpensive for an adult sized costume) and tacky looking, but it’s not!it's fun. :) I actually like it; like that softer tulle was used for the ruffles not scratchy netting, like that there are 5 layers of netting, plus smaller ruffles on the panty part of the leotard. So full coverage on the butt. (Actually, I’ll probably wear capri leggings underneath for comfort as well) Like that the sizing was as advertised. it's comfortable enough, but with my body shape, it sure doesn't lie as smoothly as in the pic below!

Gotta find one of my bright colored running bras to wear and see how it looks layered underneath the leotard (I don’t like the leotard fit braless, and white spandex doesn't do anything to minimize the look of my back chub either). If I had time, I could make a tank top with some cutesy inspirational running slogan, but as it is I might just throw on my MM singlet or something.
I really have no business "running" a race right now; I haven't done much of anything in the last month since Delano. I've REALLY gotten out of shape the last six months. Here's my quip on that: In late Sept. I had a hysterectomy, and my daughter became pregnant--we've gained just about the same amount of weight since. However, I'm already registered for the race, and I "know" I can gut out the distance, still capable of powerwalking the 13 mile distance with in the 4 hour time allowed. So, why not do it? And have fun dressing up as well!
