Random Holiday Thoughts
Dec. 25th, 2014 10:46 amMerry Christmas and all that.
I've been sick (as in down and out) with the flu for the last two weeks. Am just beginning to feel like I may recover, even though the cough and snot has not gone away yet. Unfortunately, I also shared the bug with B. Other than a nice visit with Hannah and family last Saturday; I've pretty much been in hibernation mode. Used a good chunk of sick leave days, and otherwise have mostly slept and slept. I'm ready for a reboot.
Last Saturday, Hannah, Ken and the boys came to visit. We got them a room at the Embassy overnight. Hannah and I went to Blue Rose where she got a nice memorial tattoo for her Grandmother. I'd planned to get new ink too, but wasn't feeling up to it, told Caroline I'd be back in a couple weeks. B took the boys to Bandito for lunch and then over to SHAKALAKA, which is an indoor trampoline space. Ken and Desmond bounced around and B played grandfather keeping an eye on Lennon. Desmond seemed to have a good time there. After checking into the hotel, we went to Red Lobster for dinner, and then to Santa's Villlage downtown. Shoulda just enjoyed the lights and hot chocolate, and not been holiday sheep standing in line to "see Santa". Too long a wait. And while Desmond was perfectly fine with the IDEA of Santa this year, he had a freak out melt down when it was actually his turn to sit on his lap. Ah, the stupid things we adults put the kiddos through in the name of tradition. Desmond was chipper again by the next morning, and he enjoyed swimming in the hotel pool before check out. Then we had lunch and then goodbyes.
Being sickie, I've pretty much been living in my jammies. Looking down at them, I'm like OMG, these are filthy. Then I realized, Gaz likes to curl up and snuggle sleep---some of the guck must be sphynx sludge. B was a good hubby and went to do the laundry yesterday, even if he did miss a big pile of my stuff on the bedroom floor and left me sleeping in my dirty pjs. :) Anyway, shower for me today and a bath for Gaz too!
B is starting back to work tomorrow at a new security job. He'll be working night shifts at a Kohler warehouse. Not an exciting job, but better pay than Unemployment and at least he got back on full time again. Unfortunately, it's still with Securitas-- the same company that dimissed him from the Qualitest job site.
Work has not been going all that well for me either. The library director is making a last big push for changing things up before she retires in March. And several of those changes inpact the Reference department, basically we are now a 2 person deptartment--Jen and me. Rhonda and Stephanie will only fill in a the desk on night/weekends and are no longer really reference. Even losing a public service desk. note to self: talk to Jen about what are Ref duties--for instance, will newspapers/periodical/clipping file come back to me if Steph/Rhonda are doing other things?
Besides that, I managed to create a tempest in a teapot over the holiday display cases, which I thought were "my" responsibility, but not really. (Seems it's really important who gets to say where the holiday centerpieces are placed; anyway a territorial dispute and miscommunication ensued) And so, under the guise of it ""not being a reference duty", the task of doing displays and keeping up the case scheduling has been given elsewhere. Feels like punishment to me; one of the few creative things I got to do. Also, got the blog reassigned away from me; that's ok--I wasn't doing a good job keeping up with it and Steph/Rhonda can just plug in the same messages as go out to our other social media.
But the real kicker was being told I need to "tone it down and be more conservative". No more colorful hair, no more overly bright outfits. Director said "she'd just been too lax with me." So, I'll have to go shopping for work drag soon. No more running shoes of various hues; but I do have a pair of passably comfy plain black shoes, so I'm ok there. Guess I'll go get my hair shorn short enough to remove the purple and let it grow back natural. No more frilly peasant skirts and layered contrasting colours. I need to get a couple pair of black slacks, single color tops and cardigans. I thought I could "be me" at work; thought it was all cool and acceptance; it was one of the things I really valued. But now, time to be dragged back into the old standard library worker stereotype. I know, it's just work drag, but still...
Yeah, I'm getting rebooted all over the place. Time to figure out how to make my peace with it. Figure out how to make my job work for me and me work for it. Time to begin to pay more attention again to my health and sanity.
Back to Xmas. I've got a stack of gifts to open later today--all from B's relatives. Have exchanged online Greetings with my family--and will probably talk to Hannah and Coleen on the phone at some point, but that's about it. Have a potpie to have for dinner and peppermint ice cream with hot fudge sauce for dessert. Been re-watching the FIREFLY series dvd's, but have been too sick to even concentrate on reading a book. Maybe I'll get back to my sphynx doll project and other crafting soon too.
