It wasn't an overall PR for me, but it was a good day anyway. (less than the 56 miles I did in this race last year, but more than the 46 I did my first year.)

Here's the brief rundown:
Delano Park 12 Hour Run stats: 49 miles in 11:55:09; 33rd place overall out of 86; 11th female out of 34; and 1st place in Women's Master's Division! Got to spend a great sunny day with good folk (other runners, family & friends)! Blah on going out too fast during the first 10 miles, a bit of nagging foot pain and 7 newly acquired blisters, as well as a few too many (but necessary) "pit stops".

Now, we'll start in with some of the details. This gets kind of long and rambing--sort of like the race itself.

There were a couple sort of mini-perk PRs for me in this event: I booked my fastest 50k time in a race-- 6:55. And I placed FIRST in the Women's Master (over 50 years old) Division.

And I have to admit, I was tickled pink to have placed in the Women's Master Division. :) (disclaimer: I only took the division first because Liz Bauer, who is 51, kicks ass and won her award as the third woman overall)

As usual, Barry was great being there for me from start to finish. (I can't say enough about how good he is to me.) My very pregnant daughter Hannah and her boyfriend Ken showed up by mid afternoon; we had to joke about her actually getting to a race before I finished. Mona and Graham weren't running, but did drop by; Mona and I had a nice chat for about half a lap. Tina and Dan were my only local library friends to make it over to the park. :)

I kind of divvied the race up in my mind; get to 10K distance,; then 10 miles; next is a half marathon; followed by 25K; 17 miles (longest run since New Year's); then the milestone of a marathon; 50K (Ultra distance); 39 miles (or half of what I did in my 24 hour effort), 40 miles (distance of the next race I'm registered for); 46 miles (what I did my first year at Delano). Rats..didn't quite make it to the 50M mark and goal (if only this or that had been different), but really I'm content enough with my 49 mile dsitance for the day.

I also spent quite a bit of time not trying to think about distances, but doing some "mindful motion" meditation, breathing in and out and thinking "Here and Now, Here and Now..."

Met, chatted with, and got to know some of the other runners:
Margaret and I got to run together a few miles again this year.
Angela was there.
Met a couple more guys who are on the ultra mailing list.
Talked to Fred, who ran the Rouge-Orleans last weekend!
Saw some folks I'd run with at Freedom Park at New Year's. Candy Findley was particularly friendly, and always had something nice to say every time she lapped me. (I've added her to my FB friends)
Another friendly girl was another Heather. (lol, I think there were three or four women named Heather running..so I'm not exactly sure which other Heather I was enjoying talking to!)
Tammy, was also an encouraging front runner woman, who I saw a lot of as she kept passing and lapping me. LOL...I may have had my purple hair and tattoos, but she gets the award for FLASHIEST outfitted runner (she was wearing hot pink, with silk flowers sewn to her cap, and a glitter-lame waist pack); lest you think she wasn't serious though, she logged 69 miles!
I got to meet Jamie Donaldson, women's leader with 78 miles and second place overall; and even she complimented me on hanging tough and doing well. Such a smooth focused runner.

And then there was the army guy running for charity by wearing a bomb disposal suit ; he was hoping for a 50K distance but a 26.2 marathon is still a long way wearing 75 extra pounds of padding on a warm sunny day! http://wwww.nateoda.org/NewLook/
bulletin.html There was another charity runner in the race as well. A local news crew was out interviewing him; I'm in the first couple seconds of the video clip (the funny gaited runner in the white cap and black togs. http://www.waff.com/Global/stor

I ended up not wearing my Mountain Mist shirt (for the warm weather I was wearing a tank top), but I did wear the cap from the MM race. :)

This was the fifth year for the Delano Park 12 Hour Run (my third time there), and the first year that there was good weather for the event. Of course, by afternoon when it got into the upper 60's, more than one runner was commenting on how nice a little bit of overcast and cool would be. It wasn't beastly hot by any means, but it was warm and sunny after what seemed like a long cold winter. lol; be careful what you ask for. I did have to send B. over to Walgreen's Pharmacy to get me some sunscreen. And I was happy to have my new glasses with transition lenses.

As I mentioned in my brief, I started out too fast (fast being a relative term) and jackrabbited the first 10 miles at my "best" race pace--about 10 minute miles. My foot started making itself noticeable at about 13 miles, and things slowed down from there. (my average overall pace was 14:36) Note to Self and Goal: TRY using Galloway walk/run intervals and going out more slowly..SEE if it makes a difference (down the road in later miles) in my next ultra, which will be the Strolling Jim 40M in May.

Was not happy having to stop at about mile 28 and deal with blisters. A couple minor ones on the left foot and a couple nasties on the right. (and when I finished a couple of the blisters had blisters). I was using a forefoot pad in my right shoe; perhaps that helped with the metatarsal pain but added to the blisters. Or the lingering metatarsal pain was affecting my gait which added to the other problems. Or I still haven't found the perfect combination of socks and shoes. Or I need to lose some weight. Still hobbling around some today, but getting better.

I was smart enough to wear my gaiters. The path at Delano is a good surface, dirt and fine gravel, but the gaiters helped keep the gravel out of my shoes. Several other runners commented those sure looked like a good idea. Wish I'd gone ahead and worn my Zensah calf sleeve too; seemed to have had just a bit more cramps and aches without them. btw, my Zensah sports bra was very comfortable!

Also had to make more restroom breaks than usual. Not sure what it was that didn't set quite right and led to a bit of digestive intestinal upset. Wasn't a horrendous problem, but annoying and time delaying. On the bright side, at least there was the park restroom to use on a single mile loop, and it wasn't a trail run which would have had me diving for the trees and bushes every so often.

Listened to my MP3 player only for a hour or so. Some perky Irish music, the album Year of the Dog by Cullan's Hounds, and the soundtrack from Run Lola Run. Somehow the lyrics from Lola's track "WISH" seemed to resonate:

"I wish I was a person with unlimited breath.
I wish I was a heartbeat that never comes to rest "
